The Navy SEALS training facility is in San Diego.  These are the most elite human beings on the planet.  Just six miles away is a homeless encampment.

The people living on the street and the people protecting our country may be within vicinity of each other, but they couldn’t be further apart.  

Those who choose to sleep on the sidewalk have given up on everything; finding shelter, transportation, clothing, health, etc.  

What would make someone go against their natural instinct for survival?

On the contrary, what makes a person sign up for the hardest training on the planet?

The two answers are closely related.
